With the installation of the pictorial work DORT by Freiburg sculptor Jochen Kitzbihler on the outside wall of the Biliothek (since April 2012), a window is opened to a distant and at the same time familiar-looking place, into a new time. The satellite image shows Victoria Crater on Mars. On the walls of the fortress-like library building, the image of a once enormous cosmic impact becomes a symbolic opening that leads to the interior of the humanist library and reveals conceptual connections.
The point of reference are the outstanding writings of Matthias Ringmann (Cosmographiae Introductio, 1507). In these books from the collection, the newly discovered worlds and “Terrae Incognitae” in America, Africa and Asia were explored, described and mapped by the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in colored handwork at the dawn of the modern era.

L’installation de l’œuvre graphique DORT que l’on pourrait traduire par Là-bas, du sculpteur originaire de Freiburg en Breisgau Jochen Kitzbihler, introduit un lointain inconnu mais devenu marquant et familier de notre époque contemporaine.
Il s’agit d’une image satellite du cratère Victoria situé sur la planète Mars, un cratère recouvert de sable, résultant d’un impact cosmique d’une incroyable force. Cette image ouvre une brèche dans le mur imposant (majestueux) de la Bibliothèque Humaniste, conduit à l’intérieur et s’arrime à son fonds...
Car parmi les ouvrages de la Bibliothèque se trouvent les remarquables écrits de Matthias Ringmann Cosmographiae Introductio 1507 qui décrivent les premières explorations vers le nouveau monde d’alors la Terra Incognita d’ Amérique, d’Afrique et d’Asie. Recherches que le cartographe Waldseemüller a catographié à la main et en couleurs.
Au début du XXI siècle la Terra-incognita se trouve loin de la planète Terre, sur la Lune la planète Mars ou bien plus loin encore . Les sondes “Voyager“ ont déjà quitté notre système solaire, cette curiosité vers d’autres lieux de séjour dans l’inconnu est intacte et participe de notre élan vital.
L’œuvre graphique Dort rassemble en étoile et en surimpression de l’image du cratère Victoria 32 bribes de phrases, questions, messages qui interrogent la possibilité d’une vie ailleurs: WOULD YOU FEEL LOST OR FREE...et nous renvoient à notre humaine condition Ici et maintenant.
