Terrain images - image series based on digital surface models
The graphic series presented in this overview were created using high-resolution data - so-called digital surface models. These elevation reliefs, also known as hillshades, are used in conjunction with congruent aerial photographs for surveying, cartographic, scientific and geological purposes, as well as for the prevention of potential natural hazards.
To generate the high-precision images, the landscape topography is first captured from the aircraft using a laser scanning process. The cloud-like point images obtained are then used to create three-dimensional, three-dimensional landscape models using complex conversion processes, including the incorporation of an artificial oblique effect.
In the form of surface relief used here, vegetation and buildings are filtered out so that the pure rock or ground surface (with traces of paths and roads) is visible. I use the underlying image data with the kind permission of the Vorarlberg State Surveying Office.
''The images are placed in the sculptural context of my work after minor optimizations or interventions - such as contrast enhancements, color tinting or inversions - and further processed with conceptual intention.
In addition to the theme of place, the effect of the pure surface of the earth, without plants and buildings, is a central aspect. Here, the series of graphic images take on a timeless dimension and question the state of the present. The viewer is caught in an ambivalence between the diverse, aesthetic form of the earth and the simultaneously existential dimension of our existence.
