(...) And yet the sculptor is obviously concerned with more. It is the question of his material – which now does not mean where granite & Co geographically come from. Kitzbihler digs deeper. He is concerned with materiality itself, with processes of decay, erosion, the creation of form, and with the fact that structure consequently alsoalways means transformation. At this point, the sculptor’s material is far more than a means toan end. It becomes the content itself. In concrete terms, this means that Kitzbihler stakes out a field in an exhibition room with nine regularly arranged erratic blocks from the loess of his adopted home in southern Baden. By bringing the stones ungently to the ground, he changes their structure. Parts burst off, whole stones shatter. A video further evokes in parallel this theme of erosion, but also of energy states.
