DerMassefluss (FlowOfMatter) 2011/2015 Landesgartenschau Landau 2015, Aluminium-Letters inlaid in the ground. Diameter: 12,73 m (= 1/millionth of the Diameter of the Earth)
Project statement (jk):
The installation “The Mass Flow” is based on a scientific text by the geologist and renowned meteorite researcher Dr. Gero Kurat, Natural History Museum, Vienna:
EXTRATERRESTRIAL BODIES COLLIDING WITH THE EARTH PENETRATE ITS ATMOSPHERE AT THE COSMIC SPEED OF 10 TO 70 KILOMETERS A SECOND. THE FLOW OF MASS ON EARTH VARIES STRONGLY WITH THE MASS OF THE INVADING OBJECTS. THE MAIN MASS OF THE DAILY INVASION IS BORNE BY PARTICLES MEASURING 0.1 MILLIMETERS IN DIAMETER AND TOTALS 100 TONS A DAY, SOME 40,000 TONS A YEAR. THESE PARTICLES AND THE EXTREMELY LARGE BODIES WHICH HIT EARTH VERY OCCASIONALLY PLAY THE MAIN ROLE IN THE EARTH’S GROWTH.
The floor text in the form of a circle poetically reproduces this scientific and analytical text.
The text can be read from outside the circle, the inner space in the installation becomes a magical, to a certain extent inaccessible place - a gathering place of cosmic matter. Emerging paths around the writing circle are desired.
''In the field of meaning described, the work creates a quiet, unforeseen change of context in the generally rather hermetic, idyllic setting of the State Garden Show. The reference to the location moves in precisely this ambivalence.
