Matthias Bleyl, Berlin 2006, from publication "Monolithic systems":
(...) It is difficult to imagine a greater contrast than the practically untouched stone fragment and the high-tech laser. According to the dualistic philosophy of east Asia that Kitzbihler came to know while studying with Hiromi Akiyama and on numerous trips to Asia, and which has undoubtedly influenced his work, differences are built up in order to overcome them. The installation ON THE INSIDE represents a larger system in its ”super-naturalness”, namely, culture on the one hand, represented by a technical instrument, and nature on the other. However, in the tense combination there is even a meaning that goes beyond that of the installation itself. If the observer enters the area of stones he becomes an interactive component of the installation; he himself catches the ray of light and throws shadows on the stone, interrupting the continuous line in the sense of a systematic reaction. In the interaction between subject and object which starts when someone enters the installation, even insignificant changes have considerable effects. Here a direct reference to the present is definitely made, for instance relating to variations in complex natural ecosystems, whose labile balance can be hugely disturbed by even insignificant human intervention (...).
