Jochen Kitzbihler’s LA HALTE is a floor sculpture designed specifically for this site: situated on the path between the two city walls, 12 slabs form the letter «H». The idea is to become aware of the place and of one’s own presence, a place to stop, discuss and observe, but also a (landing) sign, visible from afar in a third, vertical axis, seen from the sky.
Perceived as a sculptural ideogram (letter-sign, double «U» opening), the «H» links the mountain (Hahnenberg) to the Rhine plain, the vineyard to the church and the village, and places the visitor at the centre of these multiple directions. The letter «H» thus refers to a multitude of spatial, social and contextual references.
